Breakfast in a Jar

There is something so attractive about serving something in a jar.  It makes something look so cute, rustic and special.  The other morning I put my break-y in a jar.

On this morning I had plain yoghurt, with cubes of avocado, slices of banana with sprinklings of bee pollen, linseeds, cacao nibs.  Now I know avocado on yoghurt sounds like a suspicious thing to have but don't knock it until you've tried it. I like the creamy texture of avo with the creamy texture of yoghurt.

I do have to admit that this little jar of yoghurt pictured here didn't fill me up- I had more banana and avo on the side- but for presentation purposes, I kept those out of the picture. Here's to trying weird and wonderful food combinations.  After all, how else do we come up with popular concoctions as smoked salmon with cream cheese?

Product Review: Oatifix

My good fabulous friend Geneva lured me into Lush many a time when we lived together at University. Geneva is Lush's biggest fan: she uses their shampoo bars, soaps, lip balms, moisturisers- the lot.  As she recommends Lush so highly, and the fact that she has gorgeous and glowing skin, I decided to try out one of their fresh face masks: Oatifix.

The little secret here is that Lush are very good to strangers that walk through their door.   Not only are they extremely friendly bubbly enthusiastic people but they also like to give away little testers of their products. #woopwoop.

What I like about Lush (apart from free-bee's and nice people) is that their products are all organic and from a natural base.  This face mask for example is pretty much made from bananas, almonds, vanilla and oats.  -Sounds like my kind of breakfast! It makes sense really.  All natural products for an all natural healthy looking skin.  Here is the ingredients for this fresh face mask.

Watch how it is made...

What Did I Do?
I slapped a nice layer of Oatifix on my face, left it on for fifteen minutes and washed it off with hot/ warm water.  When washing it off I did the whole circle rubbing action to remove any dead skins cells.

What Do I Think?
Flipping fabulous.  My face feels like a baby's bottom- seriously smooth and clean. Although this face mask is supposedly for dry skin, I would suggest it to anyone in England with this cold below 5 degrees weather. The cold dehydrates my skin and therefore this mask is a brilliant boost.  Oatifix is quite a nice price too- only £5.95 for 75g of the stuff.  Nice, compared to the creme de la mers anyway.

Problems?
I have two problems with this mask:
1) It smells so good when you put it on taht you want to eat it.
2) It only lasts roughly four days as it is fresh- it is quite hard to use 75g in four days.  My advice- it great for a girls night in.

Banana Pancakes

Pancake day... ahem.. I mean Shrove Tuesday.. is around the corner (its next week). As I have been brought up going to Christian schools, but in a family and society that is pretty much atheist  Shrove Tuesday has always been celebrated, but celebrated for the fun of making pancakes.

As a lover of all things healthy I have adopted this pancake recipe as my go-to breakfast. The average joe who is not bothered about eating healthy often looks at me in disbelief when I say I mash egg and banana together to make my pancake mixture.  But what is so nice about fried flour and milk I ask?  The sweetness of banana and flavour of egg goes together like Catharine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas; unconventional, unexpected, they look wrong together but they make a rather sweet and successful couple... so give it a go!  Why don't cha?!

Banana Pancakes: Makes 1 pancake

Ingredients:
1 egg
1/2 banana
baking powder
coconut oil
linseeds

Instructions:
1) Mash banana, whisk egg with a sprinkle of baking powder all in one bowl
2) Grease frying pan with coconut oil. Sprinkle pan with linseeds.  This is for added fibre and omega threes but also gives a nice crunch and helps with the non stick business.
3) Heat pan until hot then pour eggy mixture in the pan. Cook. Flip the pancake when you can see that it is mostly cooked and when you give the pan a jiggle the pancake moves in its form. So flip it then cook it for about 20 seconds more then serve on a plate.

Topping Suggestions:
Drizzle of coconut oil
Drizzle of honey
Cocoa nibs
Peanut Butter
Berries
More banana
Greek Yoghurt
Ricotta Cheese
Sprinkle of cinnamon
Chopped roasted nuts
Seeds

... the possibilities are endless

NB:  They are not very filling so if you are not going over board with the toppings then you might want two... just saying...

Loubie Loup: My Twinie's blog

I introduced my twin Laura on a 'style file' back in September. I think Laurie quite liked the whole blogging thing as she has only gone and set up her own.

Being twins people often try and create some black and white differences between us to help them differentiate us as people. For example, Sarah short hair, and Laura Long hair. Laura in blue and sarah in pink.  This has happened from day one. This differentiation continues into our personalities and interests too.  Despite the fact that we both have big interests in fashion and healthy cooking, I have always been known as the twin with the 'passion for fashion' and Laura has been dubbed the amazingly healthy cook.  - what nice things to be known for, dont cha think?

So with my 'fashion-y' based blog, Laurie has now created her own foodie-y blog.  Here is her first post:  Yoghurt Banana Cinnamon and Dark Chocolate Muffins... nom nom nom

Being in South Africa for so long, I not only miss my sister, but I seriously miss her cooking.  I'm looking forward to more posts twinie. XX
